Whitaker offers an alternative take on alcohol addiction. This means we misunderstand what addiction is, what causes it, and how to treat it, especially for women. It is noteworthy to be said because I’ve read tons of books with a “feminist” (read: white women) lens - Holly appropriately calls out her privilege & discusses the intersection of race & queerness into the dialogue that honestly very few white cis women do. The cookbook author responded and shared she was four weeks sober. Thats because in many cases, women had quit their relationships long ago they just didnt say anything, according to family therapists. In Quit Like a Woman, Whitaker contends that we as a society see alcohol, addiction, and recovery all wrongthat is, exclusively through a masculine, patriarchal lens. As someone who also works closely with impacted individuals who are women, people of color or other marginalized groups the difficulty of “getting sober” when the only programs available and marketed as legit are ones who don’t take into account your lived experiences rang true. Holly does an amazing job of critiquing & taking down a white cis men system that has continued to hold up white cis men behavior. Resistance to the patriarchy, racism, capitalism, cisheteronormative recovery. As a self-proclaimed social justice oriented activist, this book resonated with me. Whitaker’s Quit Like A Woman has been praised for its unflinching examination of society’s obsession with alcohol and how it impacts women especially. I've been following Holly Whitaker on Instagram for a couple years, and I bought her book in hopes that it would be beneficial not just to me, but also to the women in a treatment court I work with as a public defender. I’ve been experimenting with slowly weaning off drinking alcohol & being more intentional about when, if I choose, to drink. Quit Like A Woman: The Radical Choice to Not Drink in a Culture Obsessed with Alcohol by Holly Whitaker is out now in hardback, published by Bloomsbury, 14.99. Quit Like a Woman is part autobiography, part 'how to,' & part cultural critique. However, I just couldnt get past the bossy & condescending tone. This book came into my life at a perfect time. Quit Like a Woman: The Radical Choice to Not Drink in a Culture Obsessed with Alcohol by. Revolution is a reaction to violence, and it’s hard generative, in that revolution calls forth a laten power that resides in each of us that’s been waiting it’s whole life to burn the fucking system to the ground.” “Our revolutions don’t rise out of peak experiences they emerge when we’re smacked down, robbed out of our spirit, angry, oppressed.
